The long version

Twelve numbered blocks stood up in a circle, one throwing pin, and a scoring rule that rewards knocking over exactly one block instead of flattening the lot. It is the kubb-style game played across half of northern Europe, cut from rubberwood and sized for a garden rather than a field.

The numbers do the work. Knock one block down and you score its number; knock several and you score the count, not the sum. First to fifty wins — and going over fifty drops you back to twenty-five, which is how a game that looked finished runs another twenty minutes.

After each throw the blocks get stood back up where they fell, so the circle drifts across the lawn as the game goes on. By the end you are throwing from somewhere you never planned to stand.

Rubberwood is shock-absorbent — it takes a hit from the pin without chipping along the grain the way softwood does. The whole set lives in a drawstring bag and weighs less than a bag of groceries, which is why it is the one that ends up at the beach.

  • Fun family game

This game was delivered yesterday and we have played it several times already. It’s a very fun family friendly game. Downloading a score keeping app makes it much easier than using the scoreboard but they have a scoreboard in the bag. One of our pieces is already cracked but I think that’s probably just something that happens with this game, you are throwing a heavy dowel at other dowels.

  • Good value for money and a fun game!

This is an easy yard game that anyone can play. I thought the value was good for the price and we played with it a lot the day we got it. Some of the pieces are chipping but I think that’s just going to happen with use.

  • Fun little game

We have had a variety of people playing this game and it is fun for all levels and ages. The scoring takes a minute to get the hang. You will need a fairly large area to play in my opinion as they can get really spread out. It’s a small bag and you can take anywhere. I just wish it was something that could be played in a parking lot for tailgating as we had so much fun! But this one!

  • Quick-moving

As a fan of Kubb, I wasn't too sure if I would enjoy this garden/backyard game. However, there is a strategy and speed to the game that allows multiple players of multiple skill levels to enjoy the game together. I gifted it to a friend and then we played it while camping in the mountains. The varied terrain brought a unique sense of challenge to the game. It's also quite compact and comes with a great little carry bag.
